PUNJABI (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) FIREFOX ANDROID (FENNEC) LAUNCH Event

On 14th Sept,2014 at 7PM I attended Mozilla Firefox for Android Event hosted by Mozilla (Punjabi Community) at Ludhiana, Park Plaza and around 20 participants attended it. During event I collected some point for event report. This event was sponsored by Mozilla. Main attraction was that all the guests and contributors communicate with each other in Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ).

Event started with welcoming participants and speakers behalf of Mozilla community. Then each participant gave little bit introduction about their day job and what they want to seek from this meetup.

Inder Punj started with to introduce about Mozilla Firefox for Android. Motive of Mozilla behind this free software. OS Required for this browser and hardware support etc. Inder had discussion with participant about why we should use this in Punjabi language and how we can scale it, what are different products are available in Mozilla which can used for different purposes. Firefox Marketplace introduction provided, which is available with Firefox Browser.

Pirthi Dhaliwal started with why we need performance for Mozilla products and without it what are different challenges we face, like wrong design, hardware crashes, hardware limit and deployment technology. Pirthi introduce guests about different projects and how Punjabi community participating in them.

We discussed what different challenges we faced while testing/l10n etc and how we resolved them. We introduced peoples about bugzilla and show them sample bugs that was opened and reported closed after fix.

Peoples start to show interests in this browsers while most of the guests was already using Firefox in Punjabi in their personal laptops and office computers and was excited to download Firefox on their android phones and was very happy to see browser running in their native language. Inder and Pirthi helped peoples to download Firefox Desktop and helped them to run Mozilla in Punjabi.

Peoples started their Q/A session with Inder and Pirthi and we both started to answer their queries. Some of the peoples was interested to start localization and curious to know the process, we explain them online/offline translation and introduce them various tools that we are currently using in Translation.

After that introduce Peoples about Firefox OS. Peoples was curious to know its cost and was surprisingly asking that it was the same phone which is out of stock always when they search for some good cheap smartphone who support Punjabi. We tell them about the phone in brief and its different models and their cost available in the market. Pirthi and me replied their many Questions related to phone. More interesting thing was this ever “Waiters” show interest in this phone and take interest in what we were discussing. and later approach us for their queries.

After replying their Q/A we invites guest for cake cutting ceremony. Peoples joined us for this and enjoyed delicious care after that.

After this interested peoples gather around us started their session with us for the issues they currently faced to install Mozilla on their laptop and mobiles. Me and Pirthi gave them detailed answer to their queries and helped them to sort out the issues they are facing. And promise us that they will encourage peoples in their offices to use Punjabi while they all are using mozilla already but in English 🙂

At end, before dinner we thanked peoples for come and for their time to attend this event. Indeed at end peoples was happy and promised us to use  and promote Mozilla in Punjabi. At end group photo has been taken for the press release.

We would like to thank MozillaJeff Beatty for helping to make this event happen.

Chrome – test Drive…

Google chrome released long time back, I never tried it, but after using some mobile services and read about N900 + Chrome, I thought to test run. Finally start with Mac OS version, then tried on Linux (Fedora x86_64 RPM build by google), and Finally on Windows. It imported all data from Firefox on All platforms very easily , no error, and look was same on all OS, Same feel.

Book Mark Sync was quick feature, which I liked most as Firefox, need to install Weave and then it ask Few more username and password and PIN, then start sync, but for Chrome, someone need only Google a/c and it is done. But what I missed is Merge feature, which works better on Firefox (it ask what to merge), but chrome don’t. You have to merge or not sync at all. Secondly not sure, but I found it is not syncing Password and Browser history like Mozilla Weave

Overall smooth ride, cool look, faster loading, interface than Firefox.

for i18n/l10n point, it is not available in my language (Punjabi), for which I pushed Issue. For Indic, it is available in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu.

it is Open Source, so got en-GB file to translate, start work if I can push to Google, where I am not sure whether they accept code or not.

Firefox Rendering for Indic Language

Firefox 3.0.x’s rendering is very bad and it is
almost impossible to work in localize environment with
firefox.

When Firefox downloaded and used in Punjabi language (pa_IN)
locale (environment), English web pages are showing characters
in Punjabi (Non-English) font. (Juck characters as in screenshot)

Blog Screenshot

And yes, it is problem on Linux, but not confirmed on Windows.

it is almost impossible to read the Text on most website. Wonder
is that Punjabi Websites works fine.

Firefox Rendering Problem

First bug was filed for Fedora Bugz #460865, which is later
upstreamed to Mozilla

Mozilla Bz #455647 is handle very quickly and fixed
bug for trunk (firefox 3.1/1.9.1), but Firefox 3.0.3/4/5/6/x
is still without patch. If patch is not
available, then Fedora 10, Opensuse 11.0/11.1 will suffer
and native user will actually suffer from it.

Can someone from Mozilla or Indic community will ask
Mozilla l10n to make commet in Bug (or make blocker
for 1.9.0.5/6)?
It is really difficult for regular Indic user to work
with firefox (3.0.x) without patch?

a Project Change from pa-IN to pa – Mission, not only word

Unicode make it clear that ‘pa-gur-IN’ is basic part of ‘pa’ locale

where pa-gur-IN Represent as —
so Punjabi-Gurmukhi-India Script is actually making ‘pa’ locale.

So Most Project already using ‘pa’ is for Punjabi, quite few project
like mozilla is using pa-IN, which need to update.

A bug 380287 filed for Firefox/Thunderbird
updates.

I tried to file before Firefox 3 Release and asked to fix it, but
Mozilla Team was busy with other important task, so it was skipped.
Finally Team have a time and get back to it.

Unicode: http://www.unicode.org/cldr/bugs/locale-bugs?findid=1300
———————————————————————
pa (Stage 1) //Punjabi =
pa-IN (default)(unicode bug _above)
/ \
/ \
pa-arb pa-gur (Stage 2) //2 different Script
(Shahmukhi / Gurmukhi)
| |
pa-PK pa-IN (Stage 3)//Region based,
Pakistan India
———————————————————————

So, Now First we need to skip region based choice and to
original locale choice (that is ‘pa’), which is important
as if you run a application, by giving pa-IN or pa-PK, and
no translation available for that, then application will check
for ‘pa’ translation. As ‘pa’ is default, so we need to use it
(as Unicode confirmed this).

What happened if Shahmukhi Script people want to start project
for Punjabi?
Surely they have to use script encoding with language like pa-arb
or pa@arb as there is script difference and only solution is to use
arb with pa and it is true for all projects. After all script is basic
difference, not region as any Shahmukhi Punjabi User can be
anywhere is world as Gurmukh Punjabi Script User are.

I got most response from NRI Punjabi people instead of India based.
so it is not good to attach a specific region with locale due to
population (census). I was never happy to divide a language
on basis of region, as Language has no boundary itself, but it
flow of ideas, freedom to express those, So we should make it
open and out of boundary. If I have operating system, then sometimes
it can be used to select timezone for locale automatic, but should
not be forced to use only that timezone. My Mac is showing
same issue as I selected Punjabi, then only Showing region as
India. Surely more Punjabi Mac users are outside India and
Apple is still confuse with “non-census” data. So
making my (our) locale region-free is important mission for me.

During working on bug, something interesting is pointed out that
mozilla got around 100 hits daily for Punjabi locale. It was
quite good figure, if I cared to my guess.

Hope to fix this issue soon as ‘Seth’ is working quite hard, but
I was worrying about his late comment in bug “will ask our Indic localizers
who write blogs to make the announcement.”

let us see what is output of that…
